Australia Day celebrations make a splash

Penrith City Council’s Australia Day celebrations at the Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC), Penrith Swim Centre and Ripples St Marys were again a great success attracting more than 11,000 people.
Council offered an impressive program of free and high quality family entertainment and activities. The Aquatic Show, Superboats Live Demonstration and Fireworks Spectacular finale were again popular highlights at the SIRC. We were also honoured to be chosen once again as one of three NSW sites to host an Australia Day Premier’s Reception.
Importantly, Council improved its Australia Day program of events yet again. In the morning, 73 Penrith City residents gained their Australian citizenship; during the day more than 1,000 people enjoyed free entry and entertainment at Penrith Pool and Ripples St Marys; and from 6pm to 9.30pm the SIRC offered a jam-packed evening program.

Aquatic Ski Show to make a splash on Australia Day!

Family favourites ‘The Smurfs’ will launch Penrith’s free 2012 Australia Day celebrations at the International Regatta Centre on 26 January from 6pm.
Penrith City Mayor Greg Davies said children and the young at heart would go wild with the evening line up, featuring Smurfs Character Shows and the chance to get up close to The Smurfs when they do a meet and greet.
“The ever popular Smurfs will grace the stage from 6pm, so grab your seat early. You can also meet The Smurfs in person,” Councillor Davies said.
“The Sims Metal Management Extreme FMX & Aquatic Ski Shows are not-to-be-missed, with one lucky audience member to become the proud owner of a new Yamaha Jet Ski valued at $12,000 courtesy of Sims Metal Management.
“Fans can also get excited about singer-songwriter and 2008 Australian Idol winner Wes Carr performing live. Wes Carr will gear everyone up for Penrith’s Australia Day climax; the Fireworks Spectacular presented by Endeavour Energy at 9pm.
“To avoid the typically searing heat of the past, all the best acts that residents have come to expect from Penrith’s Australia Day festivities have been packed into an early evening show with intergenerational appeal.

Penrith Pool celebrates its 50th birthday on Australia Day 2012. Entry to Penrith Pool will be free from 9am to 5pm on Thursday 26 January, with various games and activities including:

Penrith plays host to the next BIG sporting event. Competitors have the chance to win $10,000.
Over 200 competitors will take part in Tennis ‘Tie Break Shoot-Out’ on Friday, December 23 at Woodriff Gardens, Castlereagh Rd, Penrith.
The two-day tournament starts 9am and concludes at midday the very next day.

Penrith Valley’s outstanding attractions have an information centre to match with the Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre announced as a finalist in the 2011 NSW Tourism Awards.
The centre will compete for the title of Best Visitor and Information Services in NSW at the awards evening on 17 November.
Penrith City Mayor Greg Davies said it was an opportunity to promote our tourism success.
“The staff and volunteers at Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre provide exceptional customer service 363 days a year. I’m sure we’ll all be crossing our fingers on the awards night to see Penrith Valley rightfully recognised as the place to be,” Councillor Davies said.
Finalists in the same category are regional visitor centres from Bathurst, Port Macquarie, Lismore & Nimbin, Lithgow and Wollongong.

Penrith Brand Strategy – Have your say!

Penrith City Council, the Penrith business community and the NSW government all share a vision for a Penrith of the future which will have an enhanced role as a major regional city within Greater Sydney.
“To achieve this Penrith will need new jobs and investment and more visitors and to attract these we need to have a positive brand image,” said Penrith City Council City Marketing Supervisor Paul Page. “As a result, Council has set a goal to develop a more positive brand image and in July engaged Generation Alliance (Gen.a) to develop a comprehensive strategy to improve Penrith’s brand image.
“I urge anyone who is reading this to complete a survey which can be accessed via the following link - http://comedge.com.au/survey/index.php?sid=43111&lang=en,” said Mr Page. “We (Council) are very interested in understanding the greater community’s thoughts and considerations. The survey only takes about eight minutes to complete.”
While Council is the lead organisation for this project, it is essential that the various stakeholder organisations jointly own the strategy and are committed to pursuing it in conjunction with their own branding and marketing.
“A series of diagnostic workshops were held recently,” said Mr Page. “These workshops have allowed Gen.a to meet a wide range of stakeholders and learn firsthand how they feel about doing business, future investment, tourism, education, the arts, health and everyday life in Penrith.
“Gen.a is now using this information to form some general ideas about the future Penrith Brand.”
The next phase is to survey a much larger number of internal stakeholders. This survey will be used to verify some of the direction derived from the workshops and to test some of the concepts and ideas that are being proposed as part of the future Penrith Brand.

A fresh approach to tourism and events

For many years there has been a concept that Greater Sydney and therefore Penrith should be treated on a similar basis to regional NSW in terms of marketing assistance. 30 years and still running strong

The Penrith Valley Nepean Triathlon is off and racing on the weekend of November 12-13 at the International Regatta Centre at Penrith Lakes celebrating its 30th Anniversary with Penrith City Council once again sponsoring the event.
More than $15,000 in prize money has attracted a great field of more than 1000 competitors.
“We’re delighted to sponsor one of the largest and longest running triathlons in Australia,” Penrith City Mayor Councillor Greg Davies said. “The race has been an institution in the City since 1982 and a real highlight of the sporting calendar for both spectators and the many competitors who participate in it year after year.
“This year is all the more important as the event is celebrating its 30thanniversary and judging by the amount of entries, it just keeps growing bigger and bigger.”
Nepean Enticer events will be held on Saturday, November 12. All race finishers in the main triathlon - which features a 1km swim, 30km cycle and 10km run - will receive a unique long sleeve cooldry material race shirt.
Record prize money has been allocated to the weekend of races with the outright male or female winning $5000 if they take out the Billy Baxter’s Coffee House Handicap. The fastest male and female swimmers of the day (fastest through the timing gate) will also take home $250 and all age group category winners will receive a pair of Brooks shoes. Both 2010 winners, Michelle Wu and Brendan Sexton will defend their titles, so racing up front is expected to be world class. All finishers in the Penrith Valley Nepean Triathlon will also receive a unique 30th Anniversary Olympic style finishers’ medallion and the Enticer Race 1 and 2 finishers (both races for the younger competitors) will also receive great finishers’ medallions.
The main triathlon will also feature four special athletes who have now completed each and every Nepean Triathlon held. Children’s Week’s all fun and games

Having fun this Children’s Week is child’s play, with the Mobile Playvan and other free Penrith City Council activities for children and their families across the City.
Penrith City Mayor Greg Davies said the week, running from 24 to 28 October, was a great incentive for families with young children to get out and about to take advantage of the great community services on offer.
Penrith City Mayor Greg Davies said: “Throughout Children’s Week, the Mobile Playvan will keep the kids entertained, while parents can pick up some practical parenting tips and advice on child literacy from trained specialists.
“Children can also enjoy Kids at The Corner at St Marys, with a science workshop, a cultural performance, story time and other activities for young minds to engage in creative play and learning.
“Swimming skills and water safety is another focus area this Children’s Week. The best way for children to develop swimming skills is through learn-to-swim classes at Penrith Swimming Centre and Ripples Leisure Centre at St Marys.
“Penrith City Council is proud to take part in Children’s Week; an Australia-wide event celebrating children’s right to enjoy their childhood. It’s a great time for children to shine by using their talents, skills and abilities,” Councillor Davies said.

Have a blast with astronomy, acting and art these holidays

Children of all ages will have a blast these school holidays with Penrith Library’s fun-filled holiday program, from 27 September to 8 October.
Featuring astronomy, art and craft, acting and architecture, there is plenty to spark kids’ curiosity and ignite imaginations.
Young star gazers will be entranced by Planetarium on Tuesday 27 September, where they’ll discover the night sky’s constellations inside a large, portable dome. The next day will keep kids on their toes with physical theatre, mime and circus tricks in the Mime O Rama show.
Teens with an artistic streak will love learning about the ancient art of henna on Thursday 29 September. Other treats include embroidery and cartooning workshops and a live African music performance.
From 4 to 8 October, primary school aged children can indulge their love of Lego in Penrith Library’s lower lounge area.
By taking part in the free ‘Build the Penrith City of the Future’, children have the chance to score a great Lego prize packs by building the best mini city.

World class rowing returns to Penrith Valley

Building on a record medal haul at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled Slovenia, Rowing Australia together with the NSW Government through ‘Destination NSW,’ has secured the rights to stage the opening round of the prestigious Samsung World Rowing Cup in 2013 and 2014.
The events will be staged at the International Regatta Centre (SIRC), Penrith Lakes, a legacy venue of the Sydney 2000 Games.International Rowing Federation (FISA) President Denis Oswald commented, “The FISA Council’s decision to attribute the first World Rowing Cup of 2013 to Sydney returns international rowing to Sydney and marks an important new era in our sport. Supported by our Title Partner Samsung, we are taking our sport global, to the southern hemisphere thus enabling us to reach new fans and extend our season.
"We are really pleased to be partnering with Rowing Australia and ‘Destination NSW’. We know Australians deliver great events and that this exciting development in our sport will be widely embraced by the world’s rowing community.”

The Penrith Valley Nepean Triathlon weekend of racing will take place on November 12-13 at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith. Now in its 30th year and with 1100 competitors taking part last year, it is one of the largest triathlons in Australia.
The main race, the Penrith Valley Nepean Triathlon will be held on Sunday and involves a one kilometre swim, 30km cycle and 10km run.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the event, the race committee has allocated prize money to winners in various categories competing in the Penrith Valley Nepean Triathlon.
All finishers will receive a unique 30th Anniversary Olympic style finishers’ medallion and a Cooldry material race finisher’s t-shirt. The race will again feature a guys vs girls format with the women starting ahead of the male wave by the difference between the leading male and female averaged over the previous five years.
There are also three other races which cover various age groups in the Penrith Anglican College Nepean Enticer Triathlons, so there is race for every age group.
Entries for this year’s races have almost reached capacity but there is still time to register.
A host of local sponsors have combined to ensure the Penrith Valley Nepean Triathlon weekend remains one of Australia’s classic triathlons with Penrith City Council one of the strong supporters of the races.

The Australian Formula Powerboat Series will draw to its thrilling finale on August 27 & 28 with the countries top racers descending on the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith to battle it out for top honours.

New Pathway for Nepean River

Residents and visitors who want to enjoy the beauty of the iconic Nepean River will soon have a public path to make their journey easier and more enjoyable.
Penrith City Council and the State Government, through its Metropolitan Greenspace Program, have jointly funded a 480 metre stretch of path near the river foreshore between Regatta Park and Francis Ave, Emu Plains.
This stretch is stage one of a full program of works that will see the path as well as kerb and guttering continue to the M4. Further stages will be completed over the next four years.
Penrith City Deputy Mayor Jim Aitken OAM said that the path, which is built to be accessible to all, will be shared by pedestrians and cyclists and will include a handrail on the river side of the stage one works.
“This path will allow residents, visitors, cyclists, joggers and walkers to experience an area of great natural beauty in our City and region,” Councillor Aitken said.
“Every day many people spend time with family and friends or enjoy exercising along this scenic area of the river.
“The path has been built on a bank and is designed to meet the latest standards. Council has also installed a handrail and some fencing, which have been made from material and colours that maintain amenity, for better safety and accessibility.
“The kerb and guttering has been installed along River Road, which will control drainage and help protect the riverbank from erosion.
“This exceptional community asset is part of Council’s vision to provide safe walking trails for a healthier community.”
The path is a part of the larger Great River Walk initiative, which aims to build a 570 km stretch of walkable path along the Hawkesbury Nepean River.

Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre was recognised as the best of its kind for promoting what’s wonderful about our City at the Greater Sydney Tourism Awards last Thursday. The centre won the ‘Aurora Visitor Information and Services Award’ for the second year running.
The awards acknowledge outstanding tourism businesses and organisations in the Greater Sydney area. Submissions were assessed by an independent panel of industry leaders, and the awards provide a benchmark for tourism operators and businesses while helping boost tourism within the region.
Penrith City Deputy Mayor Jim Aitken OAM said winning the award again was a momentous achievement, and reflected the high calibre of service in our Visitor Information Centre.
“Winning this tourism award shows that Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre remains the best in Sydney. This win means the centre will now be represented at the NSW Tourism Awards, which highlight the best tourism organisations in the state.
“The centre greatly benefits our community by showcasing Penrith City’s beautiful natural backdrop, complemented by our cosmopolitan lifestyle and great range of events. It’s also a first stop for visitors seeking information on our local attractions and accommodation.
“I would like to commend the dedicated staff and volunteers at Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre, open to the public 363 days a year, for their outstanding customer service.”
Council’s City Marketing Supervisor, Paul Page, was also acknowledged with a ‘Recognition for Service to Tourism Award’. The award recognises his contributions to tourism in Greater Sydney during the past 25 years, including 20 years at Council. Mr Page was Chair of the NSW Council of Tourist Associations, which represented local government tourism until it merged with the Tourism Industry Council in 2007. In 1996, he also helped to form Greater Sydney Tourism Inc., (GST) the peak tourism body for Greater Sydney, as a means to better promote Penrith Valley.
Local award recipients also included finalists, Penrith White Water Stadium and Sydney International Regatta Centre, and the Chifley Hotel, Penrith, which received a highly commended award in the Deluxe Accommodation category.

Businesses in Penrith Valley are set to reap the ‘awards’ again when the winners of the 2011Greater Sydney Tourism Awards are announced on July 28.
Paul Page, Penrith City Council’s City Marketing Supervisor, is also Chairman of Greater Sydney Tourism Inc which initiated the awards program last year.
“The awards seek to recognise outstanding tourism businesses and organisations in all parts of the Sydney metropolitan area,” said Mr Page. “They provide tourism-related businesses with a tool to evaluate their business, while celebrating their achievements and building staff morale. “
This year there are four finalists from the Penrith region which include the Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre, Sydney International Regatta Centre, Chifley Penrith and Penrith Whitewater Stadium.
“As Manager of the Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre I am proud to see the centre recognised in such a way,” said Mr Page. “The staff work tirelessly 363 days of the year to provide locals and visitors with information about all the local attractions, events, accommodation and information services available in Penrith Valley.

Open Day at the Arms of Australia Inn Museum

On Sunday 17 July 2011 from 9.am - 3.pm the Arms of Australia Inn Museum at Emu Plains celebrates one of the most important achievements in our early colonial history – the building of a road across the Blue Mountains by William Cox in July 1814.
On Sunday, July 17 the NSW Corps of Marines will be taking charge, of the William Cox Historical Festival and Open Day at the Arms of Australia Inn, corner of Great Western Highway and Gardenia Ave, Emu Plains, NSW starting at 9.am,
These will include a display of musketry by the Marines, trials and floggings of miscreants, and other re-enactments from the life and times of the early colony.
Among the new attractions on show this year will be a display of the Nepean District Historical Society's horse drawn wagons and carts. The 5th Light Horse Regiment will be demonstrating troop drill, the Australian Heritage Dance Company with dance the dances of yesteryear and the Oiena Pchilka branch of the Ukrainian Women's Association will again entertain with a short program of song and dance.
Children can join in old-fashioned games; pet animals in the animal farm and this year get up close and personal with live reptiles from the Herpetological Society. They can jump to their heart's desire in the jumping castle, get their face painted, try their hand in the old school room, or ride on a pony and much more.
In the afternoon, teams of ten will try to beat last year's winners of the biggest tug-of-war in the Nepean Valley. There will be plenty of displays, food, music, stalls, stage entertainment and activities, both old and new.

20 Years and counting!

City Marketing Supervisor Paul Page was one of a select few recent Council employees to clock up 20 years of service working for Penrith City Council.
During his time over the last two decades Paul has worked tirelessly promoting Penrith to New South Wales, Australia and the world while also in charge of the Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre.
Paul has moved offices many times over the years after starting in the Allen Arcade in 1991.
His two major passions are tourism and Penrith, combined they have motivated Paul over the past 20 years and served the city well.
Popular with his team because of his dedication, caring and thoughtful nature, they cannot sing his praises loudly enough.
“He’s a great boss but if there’s one fault Paul has, it has to be his jokes,” said one employee who refused to be named due to possible repercussions. “His favourite being, ‘there’s no tool like an old tool’, I just don’t get it.”

The deadline for the submission of entries has been extended. The new deadline for applying for a site inspection will be 27 May and the deadline for submission of entries Tuesday 14 June.

Vine Cottage Tool Museum opens

After 10 years of blood, sweat and tears by owners Bob and Carol Dennis, the Vine Cottage Tool Museum & Tea Room officially opened on May 10 to the public with an elegant morning tea for officials and friends.
Nestled deep in the heart of Castlereagh, part of the picturesque Macquarie Five Towns, Vine Cottage is part of the beautiful Munbilla Victorian property that was laboriously constructed over the past three decades by the Museum’s curator, Bob Dennis.
“I guess you could say it’s been a labour of love,” said Bob. “Originally I rebuilt the cottage to use as a tea room but then I decided to also use it to showcase my love and collection of old tools from the 1700 to 1800s.”
Vine Cottage Tool Museum exhibits a wide and varied range of tradesman tools. Penrith City Council has welcomed the Premier’s announcement that the NSW Government plans to bring more major events and festivals to Penrith City and the region.
Deputy Mayor Jim Aitken OAM said Penrith is primed and ready to take on and host some of NSW’s major events and festivals.
The Penrith City community and wider western Sydney region will benefit from having more quality events close to home,” Councillor Aitken said.
“The benefits to the region are enormous. Events help boost the local economy, create local jobs and attract visitors to Western Sydney, which is where almost one in every 11 Australians live.
“Penrith City Council has made attracting major events to the city a priority for a number of years.
“Penrith City has the wide open spaces and the transport to hold major events and help relieve the Sydney CBD of some of its congestion.
“Shifting some major events to Western Sydney will allow us to build on the profile of successful events we already hold such as the annual Defqon dance festival and Penrith City Australia Day celebrations, which each attract tens of thousands of local, interstate and international visitors; and, Sydney Festival events held here in January.

One more step toward a truly great walk

A new section of pathway will extend the Great River Walk and provide more opportunities for more people to enjoy the beauty of the Nepean River. The work on River Road, Emu Plains is now underway. It marks the start of a proposed loop along the west and east banks of the river from Victoria Bridge to the M4. The loop will complement the already existing section of the Great River Walk which stretches from the Log Cabin north to Cassola Place. This first stage of the loop will be built between Regatta Park and Francis Street. It will be shared by pedestrians and cyclists and will include a simple handrail on the river side. Penrith City Deputy Mayor Councillor Jim Aitken OAM said the new work was an important step toward realising the visionary Great River Walk which, with the cooperation of several councils, will eventually stretch 570 kilometres from Lake Bathurst near Goulburn to Broken Bay. “The Walk is part of our celebration of Penrith as a ‘River City’ and is an ideal way for people to enjoy this wonderful natural asset,” Councillor Aitken said. “This section of river bank, although unpaved, is already very popular with walkers and cyclists,” Councillor Aitken said. “This work will make the walk safer and encourage more people, residents and tourists alike, to enjoy the stunning views the Nepean River has to offer.” The work is jointly funded by Council and the NSW Government under the Metropolitan Greenspace Program. Funds to promote Penrith as a top destination

Penrith Valley will be marketed as the place to be this Easter Holiday with the help of an $18,000 grant from Tourism NSW.
Secured through the Greater Sydney Tourism Partnership Funding Program for a second year running, the valuable funds will be used by Council’s City Marketing team to promote Penrith as a top place to visit.
Penrith’s Deputy Mayor Jim Aitken OAM said the injection of funds would once again help Council broadcast Penrith’s “unique assets and amazing potential” to a wider audience.
“Last year’s funding was used to promote our City to the Regional NSW market through a consumer competition to profile Penrith Valley,” Councillor Aitken said.
This year’s grant, to be matched by Council, will fund a campaign to promote Penrith as an attractive destination in its own right and a convenient base for a trip to the Royal Easter Show. Visitors will be encouraged to enjoy a wide range of local experiences during their stay and offered an affordable family accommodation package through partner organisation, Chifley Penrith.
“Penrith has a lot to offer, from adventure based activities to special holiday events, nature based activities and historic elements,” said Deputy Mayor Jim Aitken. “We’re close to Sydney, have all the conveniences of a big city ourselves and yet can also offer a relaxed rural feel.”
Cr Aitken said Council hoped to secure funding through the third and final round of the funding next year to continue its important marketing projects.

Penrith City Council is encouraging seniors to get ready for 2011 Seniors Week, featuring a colourful concert on Thursday 24 March.
Embracing the theme of ‘Live Life!
It’s time to Shine’, the concert and celebratory morning tea will honour the diverse contributions of our senior residents.
Penrith City Deputy Mayor Jim Aitken OAM said seniors could look forward to the 2011 festivities, which promise excellent local entertainment.
“During Seniors Week, our City’s spotlight shines on the multiple contributions of seniors to our local area.
“One highlight will be a special concert showcasing an array of local talent, to be performed at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.
“Council is grateful for the support of the Department of Human Services-Ageing, Disability and Homecare, which has provided funding assistance to make this concert happen,” Councillor Aitken said.

Community Heritage Grants

Not-for-profit, incorporated organisations in Penrith Valley may be eligible to receive grants of up to $15,000 from the National Library of Australia in the category of ‘Environment Conservation & Heritage’.
The purpose of the grants is to identify Australian cultural heritage collections which are publicly accessible, locally held and nationally significant.
Organisations may apply for more than one project provided the combined value is no more than $15,000 and can be completed within one year.
All grant applications must be in before May 6 2011 and you may send your application from March 1.
Below are some more details of the eligibility of the grants.
Limitations: The following projects are ineligible for CHG funding:
• In-house salaries and volunteer labour costs • Publishing projects • Exhibition research, interpretation and signage, and design • Collecting projects • Oral histories - recording or transcribing • Memorials and plaques • Interpretive signage or heritage trails • Capital works, repairs and improvements to existing buildings • Microfilming of newspapers or magazines • Family history research • Emergency activities • Activities that are in progress or have been completed

Take advantage of free amusements for the whole family and head to Wainwright Park for Kingswood Family Fun Day on Saturday 12 February from 10am to 2pm.
Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said: “It will be great to see families out and about for Family Fun Day, enjoying a range of open air activities.
“All residents are welcome to take part in the entertainment, which will include a jumping castle, face painting and youth activities. Lunch is provided with a free barbeque.
“Council is delighted to join with local services to provide lively activities that encourage families to socialise with their neighbours and have fun in their local area,” Councillor Crameri said.

“We are looking for business owners who have been in business for a few years and feel they need some support and direction to grow their enterprise. This mentoring program, supported by industry specialists, targets the growing tourism sector in Greater Sydney,” Mr Corbett said.
The program which will commence on 1st March includes a series of customised workshops coupled with mentoring offering experienced business people who can offer practical support. Workshops will include Business Planning, Financial Fundamentals, Marketing, AussieHost Customer Service and Strategic Selling Skills.
NSW Small Business Minister, Frank Terenzini said, “The objective of the Business Mentoring Program is to improve business development, networking and growth opportunities for NSW small businesses. The program helps tourism businesses plan a growth strategy and address business challenges.”

Aussie pride celebrated in style at the Lakes

Penrith City Council’s annual Australia Day celebrations at the Lakes were a resounding success, concluding spectacularly with a visual extravaganza of fireworks and artistic water performances on the main lake.
The revised schedule saw activities start at 2pm, which meant spectators were more comfortably able to experience the majority of events and performances.
The water activities proved particularly popular due to the hot day and spectators were very keen to take part in the accompanied jet ski rides and enjoy the aquativities area, including walking on water, or having a splash at the beach area.
“I spoke to many people who were really happy to enjoy this important Australian celebration in their own backyard, at the beautiful Penrith Lakes,” Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said.
“Many told me the condensed program meant that they didn’t have to pick and choose which performances they could see – they could enjoy it all and it wasn’t too long a day for them, particularly families with young children,” Cr Crameri said.
“A new addition to the program, the Twilight Ceremony Water Parade, was a huge success. The parade inspired immense national pride, celebrating some of our local heroes.
“The Australia Day Spectacular fireworks and musical performance was world class, our unique setting was a perfect backdrop and I am sure this will be an ongoing part of the program in coming years,” he said.
“As always, I’m thankful that celebrating Australia Day in Penrith is a free event, which is made possible by many generous sponsors and I thank them all sincerely for their support,” Cr Crameri said.

Penrith City welcomes its newest citizens this Australia Day

Penrith City Council will celebrate its newest citizens in an Australia Day citizenship ceremony at the Civic Centre, joining communities throughout Australia in honouring this tradition.
Around 60 people from more than 20 countries will become Australian citizens in a special ceremony at the Civic Centre on January 26.
“Whether we are Australian born or have become citizens by choice, Australian citizenship is something we should value,” Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said.
“Australia Day is a fantastic opportunity to join in public celebrations like those at Penrith Lakes and share what our country means for us.”
“In particular, this January the 26th is a day to remember for those who choose to become Australian citizens, as they pledge their loyalty to the Australian people and join us to face a common national destiny.
“Penrith City’s citizenship ceremony starts at 10am at the Civic Centre. It will be followed by the great Australian tradition of a barbeque lunch,” he said.
The ceremony will be one of more than 320 across every state and territory tomorrow, with some 13,000 people scheduled to become citizens around the nation.
“Penrith City embraces its newest citizens and bids them well as they take this significant step to officially join our Australian family,” Councillor Crameri said.

Fire up for Australia Day with free Museum entry

All eyes on our Australia Day Ambassadors

The Australia Day duo of Rugby League legend Mario Fenech and long-time Governing and Artistic Director of the Ensemble Theatre Sandra Bates OAM will add gloss to the festivities at Penrith City on 26 January. The 2011 ambassadors will share in the Australia Day excitement, expected to attract 30,000 plus crowds to the Sydney International Regatta Centre for the free celebrations provided by Penrith City Council.
Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said he looked forward to Mr Fenech and Ms Bates fulfilling the ambassador roles.
“This year’s Australia Day ambassadors represent the spheres of sport and the arts, which is highly appropriate since these are two great Australian passions,” he said.
“The ambassadors’ successes and absolute dedication to their chosen fields are hallmarks of Australian achievement.”
Maltese-born and Aussie-bred Mario Fenech inspired a nation with his 15 season career playing for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, the North Sydney Bears and the South Queensland Crushers. In his younger years he struggled as an “outsider” at school but soon silenced his schoolyard critics with his rugby league skills. Introduced to the game at age four when handed a pair of shorts, socks and his first league jersey, Mario developed his sporting prowess to earn a spot in South Sydney Rabbitohs’ first grade side in 1981. He became a well-known face on the Channel Nine Footy Show where he entertained Australian television audiences and was admired by a dedicated fan base.
Fellow ambassador Sandra Bates is an acclaimed theatre director with more than 100 productions under her belt. Since 1986 she has held the highly esteemed role of Governing and Artistic Director at Sydney’s Ensemble Theatre. Directing credits include Rain Man, which toured to Penrith and Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, which played throughout Australia and received the 2006 Glugs Award for Best Production and the 2007 Helpmann Award for Best Regional Touring Production. Other career highlights include Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, which played at the Sydney Opera House and took out the Glugs Award for Best Production of 1997, and directing the David Williamson plays Charitable Intent, A Conversation, Face to Face, the Sydney Premiere of Birthrights and the World Premiere of Operator.
Sandra has received numerous awards for her commitment to theatre including the Variety Club Heart Award in 2002, the SBW Foundation Achievement Award in 2005 and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sydney Theatre Critics in 2007.
The presence of the ambassadors is just one of the highlights of an action-packed Australia Day with more than seven hours of entertainment starting at 2pm, featuring a free open air cinema screening Aussie family films, the largest fireworks and water show outside of Sydney CBD (the ‘Australia Day Spectacular’), live entertainment, water-based amusements, rides, sports displays, a koala retreat and a colourful range of market stalls.
Attendees are advised that ‘Australia Day at the lakes’ is a pet-free and non BYO alcohol event, prohibiting alcohol, glass and unsealed or open bottles. Alcohol sales and consumption will be restricted to a licensed bar at the event.

People outside Penrith City will soon know what a great place Penrith City is to work, play and invest in with the launch of a stunning locally-produced pictorial book.
Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said the book, produced by Penrith City Council and titled Penrith Valley, was an important marketing tool.
“Penrith City is a growing regional city with unique natural and community assets,” Councillor Crameri said.
“We have so much to offer, from housing, jobs, education and health services to stunning natural attractions and great sporting, recreation, retail and cultural facilities.
“The book needs few words within it. It is a collection of outstanding images by Paul Foley and Jeff Coles that say more than words ever can to portray our City’s lifestyle and natural assets.
“It’s a book that you can show your friends and visitors what a great place you live in.

International Jazz Festival comes to Penrith

Penrith City Council is proud to be a sponsor of the inaugural International Penrith Jazz Festival.
Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said the festival will be held at the world-class Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from 12 November to 14 November.
“Jazz aficionados are in for a real treat with some of the best jazz acts around descending on Penrith,” Councillor Crameri said.
“Performers include The James Morrison Sextet and jazz vocalist Emma Pask, John Morrison Quintet, Swing City Big Band, Gary Daley Quartet and Bird Yard Big Band.
“This festival is yet another example of the wide breadth of music and performance that the Joan provides year in and year out for Penrith City residents.”
Director Penrith Conservatorium of Music Valda Silvy said: “This is an opportunity for the people of Penrith to listen to some of the great legends of jazz over a weekend at the Joan.
“It’s also an opportunity for the Joan to present a program dedicated to jazz enthusiasts. It’s the first time we’ve hosted anything like this but I’m sure it won’t be last.”

BIG GREEN DAY OUT

Penrith City Council and Blacktown City Council present ‘Big Green Day Out’ on Saturday, November 6 from 10am at Mt Druitt Park.
Entry to the event is free and the day is a celebration of everything green. The special guest host will be Ranger Stacey from Channel 10’s hit show ‘Totally Wild’.
There will also be a traditional Indigenous Smoking Ceremony and dancers, plenty of live music, a silent disco as well as Eco Art & Craft stalls, not to mention Green Cleaning Workshops.
Featherdale Wildlife Park will also be there with live animal displays plus Australian Wildlife displays with Anthony Stimson.
As for freebies, there’ll be plenty of those including airbrush tattoos and face painting, a native plant giveaway and a free sausage sizzle for the first 1,000 people as well as a raffle with great prizes to be won.

Penrith City Mayor, Cr Kevin Crameri OAM celebrated with over 40 volunteers and staff from the Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre the centre’s gold award for Visitor Information Services at the recent 2010 Greater Sydney Tourism Awards.
“The centre was recently judged to be Greater Sydney’s best visitor centre,” said Councillor Crameri. “That’s quite an accolade, particularly when you consider the judges were a panel of key tourism figures.
“You outshone the competition on business performance in the areas of customer service, marketing, financial viability, business planning and risk management.”Councillor Crameri then went on to thank Council’s City Marketing Supervisor, Paul Page and the City Marketing team including all permanent staff and volunteers.
“The centre has also been automatically entered into the state awards as a finalist,” said Councillor Crameri. “I expect some nail biting will go on between now and November when those awards are announced.”

To celebrate National Water Week, Council has again organised an exciting Photographic Competition with the theme “Water in Penrith - Our Most Precious Resource”.

The total length of all waterways within the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA) is approximately 1,500 kilometres
There are 73 gross pollutant traps installed within the LGA that removed hundreds of tonnes of pollutants (such as litter, leaves, silt and plastic bottles) from our waterways each year
The stormwater network consists of about 580 kilometres of stormwater pipeline and is not connected to sewer but flows directly to our creeks and rivers
Caring for Penrith's waterways and our precious water resources is everyone's responsibility as it’s our water, our future.

Grand prix to make a splash in Penrith Valley

Mark it in your diary for the upcoming Penrith Valley Formula Powerboats Grand Prix series with the Grand Finale round billed for the weekend of 28 - 29 August.
More than 50 teams from across Australia will compete, making it the largest fleet of competitors ever to come together for a Formula Powerboat event.
These super speedy boats, which clock up to 250km/h, will make for amazing action and there will be plenty of off-track displays and promotions at the venue, the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith City.
Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said: “We’ll be seeing world-class talent at the regatta centre for the first time in two years. Come on over to see who secures the national championship.
“Look out for Cranebrook local and Formula 1 Champion in 2008, Shane Vella. He stands poised to continue his unbroken run of podium finishes, but will face strong competition from Damien McKenzie after a strong 2010 season thus far.
“On show will be Formula 1, 2 and 3 categories plus the Formula Futures, the category for junior races and intended to be the entry level to Formula Powerboat racing and the Sports Mono.”

The staff at Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre now know why they have so many happy customers. The centre has been assessed by a panel of key tourism industry figures to be the best of its kind in Sydney.
The confirmation came at the Gala Dinner for the inaugural Greater Sydney Tourism Awards on Wednesday 4 August at Castle Hill RSL, when the Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre won the Gold Award in the Tourism Services category.
The awards are based on business performance in the areas of customer service, marketing, financial viability, business planning and risk management. Assessment is based on a 30-page written submission backed up with a site visit by an expert judging panel.
In accepting the Award, Penrith City Councillor Jim Aitken OAM, noted that those who don’t have the privilege of living in Penrith Valley are still very welcome to visit and any visit will be greatly enhanced by a visit to the Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre.
Council’s City Marketing Supervisor, Paul Page, noted that this award recognises the great contribution of the City Marketing team, including the permanent and casual front line staff, the 22 regular volunteers who volunteer to assist in the centre and at major events, as well as the marketing officers whose work is closely integrated with that of the visitor centre.
The Greater Sydney Tourism Awards officially operate under the umbrella of the long established state and national awards. As a Gold Award winner, the visitor information centre automatically enters the state awards as a finalist. The state awards will be held in November.

New City Marketing initiatives launched

Over 100 guests attended the launch of three City Marketing initiatives including the 10th and latest edition of the Penrith Valley Experience magazine at the Lakeside Restaurant, International Regatta Centre, Penrith Lakes recently.
Also launched on the day was the third volume of the Penrith Valley Photo CD which features all the new photos featured in the magazine. It also contains a variety of aerial photos of the region taken by photographer Jeff Coles.
There was also a presentation looking at a recent successful ‘Experience Penrith Valley in winter’ regional NSW campaign co-funded by Tourism NSW which targeted areas outside of the Sydney region including Wollongong and Newcastle.
The 10th edition of the Penrith Valley Experience magazine contains dozens of new images which were all taken in-and-around the area using only local models by well known photographer Paul Foley.
Approximately 80,000 copies of the magazine was printed and will be distributed around New South Wales, Australia and even the world over the next 12-18 months.
At the launch Penrith City Mayor, Kevin Crameri (OAM) said the region had a lot to offer residents and visitors.
“We have so much to offer, from housing, jobs, education and health services,” he said. “To our stunning natural attractions and great sporting, recreation, retail and cultural facilities.
“Penrith is a great place to work, live, visit and invest in and this latest guide makes finding all of our local attractions, restaurants, parks, clubs and museums easier than ever.”
Connex West produced the magazine on behalf of Penrith City Council and the City Marketing Department.
Both the new Penrith Valley Experience magazine and Penrith Valley Photo CD are free and available to everyone.

Penrith VIC nominated for GST Award

The Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre has been nominated as a finalist in the category nine, Visitor Information Services category in the upcoming 2010 Greater Sydney Tourism (GST) Awards to be handed out on August 4 at the Castle Hill RSL Club.
Two other local Penrith businesses were also nominated as finalists in various categories including Chifley Hotel, Penrith and Penrith Whitewater Stadium.
Chairman of the Greater Sydney Tourism Inc, Mr Paul Page, congratulated the finalists and said;
“The 37 finalists showed excellent business practises and we are pleased with the amount of nominations in this, our first year of the awards.”
Paul continued to say he looks forward to the gala dinner where tourism will be celebrated as an economic driver of Greater Sydney and celebrates the successes of these businesses.
“It is an achievement to be nominated as a finalist and shows what great experiences we have in this area,” concluded Mr Page.
In addition, there is also a People’s Choice Award and voting lines are now open on www.greatersydney.org.au
Everyone is invited to nominate their top three businesses from the finalists, to be crowned the most popular tourism business in Greater Sydney.

VIC celebrates Volunteer Week

On Tuesday the 25th of May 2010, Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre celebrated Volunteers Week with a function held at the Visitor Information Centre.
The Mayor of Penrith, Councillor Kevin Crameri (OAM) was on hand to present all Penrith Valley volunteers with a certificate and pin for completing their Aussie Host training and to give them a big thanks for all the work they do at the Visitor Information Centre and at other Penrith City Council events.
“Obviously I don’t need to tell you there’s plenty on offer for anyone visiting, living, working in Penrith Valley,” said Cr Crameri.”Thanks to the efforts of our Ambassadors and City Marketing team, more and more people are finding out what a great place Penrith is”.
“I’ll be promoting our tourism asset during my upcoming visits to our international partners in Japan, Korea and China later this year”.
The Visitor Information Centre has 22 Ambassadors, some of which have been serving in this role for over a decade.
“We are certainly blessed to have such a wonderful dedicated group of volunteers,” said City Marketing Supervisor Paul Page. “I don’t know what we’d do without them.”

Tourism Awards improve visitor experience

Visitors to Penrith Valley will benefit from the Greater Sydney Tourism Awards which will be held for the first time in 2010.
Paul Page, Penrith City Council’s City Marketing Supervisor, is also Chairman of Greater Sydney Tourism Inc., which has initiated the new awards program.
In launching the awards last week, Mr Page said: “The awards seek to recognise outstanding tourism businesses and organisations in all parts of the Sydney metropolitan area. They will provide tourism related businesses with a tool to evaluate their business, while celebrating their achievements and building staff morale.
The awards will also provide a platform for tourism businesses to meet and develop lasting relationships with other tourism businesses and organisations within the Greater Sydney region. The benefit is a more competitive and successful business.”
The Greater Sydney Tourism Awards are officially linked with the prestigious and well established NSW and National Tourism Awards. Entrants to the Greater Sydney Awards can have their submission carry forward to state and national awards.
Greater Sydney Tourism Inc. (GST) was formed in 1996 as a regional tourism organisation to promote Greater Sydney as a tourist destination.
It has a strategic partnership with Connex West Pty Ltd to produce the visitor guide “Discover Greater Sydney” and has an active program to promote conference venues through its Sydney Wide Conferences marketing program. The tourism awards are its latest venture.
The membership of GST comprises tourism staff from a number of councils in Greater Sydney who benefit from this opportunity to work together co-operatively. GST has engaged Lori Modde of Lorick Management to manage the awards on its behalf.
Closing date to register for the awards is 15 June. Submissions must be received by 28 June. Council’s City Marketing staff will be contacting local tourism operators to encourage them to participate in this program.
Site inspections and judging will take place during June and July and successful entrants will be announced at a gala dinner on Wednesday 4 August at Castle Hill RSL Club.
Penrith entrants will receive an award entry fee discount resulting from Council’s support for the program.

International Women's Day in Penrith

Penrith City Council hosted an International Women’s Day (IWD) breakfast and Forum at the Civic Centre last week to discuss contemporary issues particular to women.
Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said IWD is an important occasion to celebrate the achievements and gains made by women in Australia and around the world.
“Penrith City Council was pleased to have Eva Cox AO and Cr Karen McKeown as keynote speakers,” Councillor Crameri said.
“Councillor McKeown is a strong advocate for women in Penrith City and in local Government. She has just been re-elected as president of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) and is the 2010 Year of Women in Local Government NSW Ambassador.
“Eva Cox AO is a prominent academic, with a long history as a social commentator and advocate of women’s rights.
Councillor Karen McKeown said: “The day was a time to focus on the historical and contemporary struggle for women’s political and social rights, for reviewing the progress that women have made, and as a day of celebration."

Seniors' Week is celebrated across the state each year. The theme for 2010 is 'Live Life! Active Ageing' with an emphasis on thanking seniors and acknowledging their valuable contribution to their local community.
In partnership with a number of local community organisations Penrith City Council hosts the major celebration event in the City: Morning & Afternoon concerts and light refreshments for local seniors at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.
This year’s event will be held on Thursday, March 25. The morning concert commences at 9:30 am with morning tea followed by the concert and the afternoon concert commences at 1 pm followed by afternoon tea. This free event celebrates the diversity of our community with a showcase of local performers.

EARTH HOUR 2010

Earth Hour is in its fourth year in Australia and is being supported in 2010 by Penrith City Council.
The highlight of the campaign revolves around a designated one hour period on Saturday 27 March when households, businesses, organisations and schools are encouraged to commit to turn their lights off between 8.30-9.30pm. This year Earth Hour also will focus on the broader aspects of sustainability, giving everyone something to do beyond the hour of darkness on Saturday 27 March, with the theme ‘Earth Hour, Every Hour’.

Australia Day 2010 at the Lakes - a great success!

Over 25,000 people braved the 40 degree plus temperature to enjoy Penrith City Council's official Australia Day Celebrations at the International Regatta Centre, Penrith Lakes on January 26.
Not surprisingly 'Splashtown' which included a giant waterslide and bumper boat rides was extremely popular as was a supervised swim in the lake.
Other popular attractions included the Aquatic Ski Show (see left), Fun Run plus the live entertainment featuring Mark Seymour and Cassie Davis.
The fireworks at 9pm were also a blast!
In official proceedings, 62 people became Australian citizens at a Penrith Civic Centre ceremony while locals Allan Bond and Gabrielle Moran were both worthy Community Award recipients. Aaron Nielsen was announced as Young Citizen of the Year.

Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri OAM said it was fantastic that Penrith Council was once again showing its commitment to sustainability.
“By sourcing renewable energy to power this event we are reducing our carbon footprint and helping the environment,” Mayor Crameri said.

Trained and Ready!

A team of 11 were successful in getting through the application and interview process to commence training as Penrith Valley Ambassadors.
Penrith Valley Ambassadors are volunteers who assist staff in the Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre and also at events such as Australia Day and the Solar Boat challenge.
The first day of training was completed in November at local attraction Mamre Homestead, where they completed an Aussie Host course. Aussie Host is a nationally recognised customer service training program that focuses on interpersonal communications, customer relations and service. It builds personal, professional and community pride and inspires a greater commitment to providing better service.
Now armed with customer service qualifications, the ambassadors will soon begin their on the job training.
There are currently 12 ambassadors who volunteer the Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre, and once fully trained this new intake will now expand the team to 23. Most volunteer on a monthly basis, some more frequently.

Rock At The Weir - A huge success!

The Rock At The Weir community festival bought to you by Penrith City Council was held on a warm sunny day on November 15 and was an outstanding success with an estimated 4,000 people attending the event held from midday until 5pm. The majority of things at the festival were free including a wonderful stage program which featured such talented performers as Elvis impersonator David Cazalet and the judging of the Miss Penrith competition by the renowned June Dally-Watkins. There were also a smorgasbord of food on offer as well as free rides and children's activities. There were plenty of vintage vehicles on display and even a Traditional Japanese children's blessing. There can be no doubt judging my all the smiling faces that were at the event that a great time was had by all.

Mamre celebrates Sydney International Food Festival in style

It was a star studded event when Mamre Homestead hosted its Inaugural 100 mile Dinner under the stars on Friday, October 16.
More than 160 guests attended the dinner as part of this years Sydney International Food Festival.
The concept of the dinner was to source all produce from within 100 miles (160km) radius. Therefore supporting local growers and producers while reducing our food miles and carbon food print.
Produce that had been grown on the property as part of Mamre’s African Employment Program was also showcased at the dinner.
The Hon Laurie Ferguson MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affair and Settlement services, officially opened the dinner and Costa Georgiadis from Costa’s Garden Odyssey SBS was master of ceremonies for the evening. Costa has also agreed to become Mamre’s first Ambassador.
Vanessa Pilla, Festival Manager, Sydney International Food Festival and Penrith Mayor Kevin Crameri and Councilors were also among the guests.
The dinner brought together local food producers, wineries, TAFE colleges, musicians, astronomers and other local businesses.
The dinner started what was a successful fundraising weekend for the Mamre project with the annual Good Living Festival also held on Sunday, October 18.
All monies raised from these two events will go to supporting programs of the Mamre Project a sponsored work of the Sisters of Mercy, Parramatta.

Makings of a City History Exhibition

Until November 22 the Penrith City Council Civic Centre foyer will host the Makings Of A City History Exhibition as part of the Celebrate Penrith 09 festivities.
In the main entrance area there is a collection of historic memorabilia on display from 1959 onwards, featuring items from the 1950s and 1960s which have loaned for this very purpose by members of the public and Council staff. The exhibition continues inside the main building and into the horseshoe area, where displays follow Footsteps in Time through history from the original inhabitants of the area, arrival of the Colonists, the Municipal era, the First and Second World Wars and period up to 1950.
After November 22, the exhibition will then travel through all the original Councils, visiting St Marys from November 25 to December 2, Castlereagh from the December 5 to December 7 and Mulgoa on the weekend of December 11 - 12.
Penrith City Council Research Services staff would like to thank all those members of Council who have contributed time or treasured personal items to the exhibition – your assistance makes our job that much easier!

No doubt you have been hearing the publicity for this event in the general media.
Penrith is an important hub for the games and we have been liaising with the organising committee for the past three years to support the hosting of a number of important sports within the Games program in Penrith Valley.
Some events are at Council operated venues while others are at other venues in the City. The team from the Parks and Recreation Departments have done a great job of liaising between the regular user groups and the organising committee to have the venues in first class condition for the events.
The sports we are hosting are:-
Rowing – International Regatta Centre (IRC)
Canoe/ Kayak – Sprint (IRC), Polo (PWS Warm up lake), Slalom (PWS), Marathon (Nepean River – Weir and Tench Reserves)
Touch Football – Kingsway with finals at St Marys Leagues Club
Baseball – Samuel Marsden Orchard Hills (Finals in Blacktown)
Competitors receive free transport to venues. Penrith Station will be the arrival point with a bus transfer system in operation from the north side commuter car park to all of the venues.
Competition starts on Monday, October 12.
Many of us remember how warm, friendly and inviting Penrith was during the 2000 Olympics. This is an opportunity to repeat the experience and impress visitors from around the world.
While it is primarily a participation event the competition will be of a high standard and admission as a spectator is free.

Setting the 'Printing' Standard!

Since the Penrith Museum of Printing began in 2001, after receiving a Commonwealth Grant and a lot of hard work by our founder Mr Alan Connell, we have managed to go from strength to strength becoming an important local and State venue for showcasing the craft and art of letterpress printing to present and future generations.
The museum has now become a fully viable and self-supporting organisation and we are rightly proud of our achievements.
However we recognised that whilst we had a lot of collective printing knowledge, experience and history amongst our members, we were not necessarily skilled in the ways of museum management and conservation techniques.
At the end of 2008 we were approached by the Museums & Galleries New South Wales (M&G NSW) staff which asked whether we were interested in taking part in their successful State wide Museum's Standards Program.
The program is completely voluntary for museums and galleries interested in improving their museum's operation and practices in both an open and supporting way.
It was a unanimous decision by our members to take part in the program.
We took the opportunity to examine the many different aspects of our operation in areas such as sustainability, emergency preparedness, conservation and financial management.
The M&G NSW staff have been extremely helpful and suppotive in guideing us through the program so that we can ultimately have a museum that is not just successful now but one that can be successfull into the future.
The program was challenging - one of the requirements was to sit down and complete a 75 page questionnaire laden with questions on our management, operation and museum practices. Following this brain sapping, (but necessary) activity we hosted two M&G NSW staff who provided their input and suggestions on how best to proceed based on our questionnaire responses.
A further follow-up meeting is scheduled for early October to further explore how we can best continue on the journey to having the best working letterpress printing museum in NSW.

Taking the Solar Boat Challenge

Hundreds of school students are primed to take part in Australia's State and National Solar Boat Challenge Finals taking place at the International Regatta Centre, Penrith Lakes on Friday, September 25.
The event, which runs from 9am to 2pm, is the culmination of months of racing challenges around the country including in Victoria and Queensland, which both held State finals.

Penrith City Council's Sustainability Unit will be at the finals with their fun environmental game, 'Eco-Pursuit'.
In a nutshell, Australia's International Solar Boat Challenge is a solar boat race for wire-guided model boats, remote control model and piloted boats.
The aim of the challenge is to increase awareness and encourage competitors to acquire knowledge and expertise in sustainability, climate change and alternative energies in an interactive way.
Run by the non-profit organisation, SEES Ltd, it is supported by government funding, local councils including Penrith City Council who is a major sponsor and numerous local schools and corporate sponsorship.

Food Glorious Food!

It all begins on Saturday, October 3rd, the Penrith Valley Food Festival at the Hawkesbury Harvest Farmers and Fine Food Market and continues for an entire month of culinary treats and mouth watering delights.
This blog entry is going to sound like one big 'ad' so you'll have to excuse me but there's just so much to tell, that it seems like the only way to get the message across.
Ok, let's get back into it.
The next event on the menu or...should I say....on the list...is the Hubertus Oktoberfest from October 2-5th. After that it's the main course, Mamre 100 Mile Dinner on October 16th followed by some nice desert in the form of the Good Living Festival: "Wine Food & the Good Life" and if you're still hungry, finish the meal with Queen Bee High tea and Honey Open Day on Sunday, October 25th.

Welcome Home Londonderry Playgroup

Parents and children of the Londonderry Playgroup were excited to return to their local neighbourhood centre following recent upgrades.
Funded by the Castlereagh Community Fund program (NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change) and the Regional Partnership program (Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government) the newly renovated Londonderry Neighbourhood Centre and Amenities Building were officially reopened on Sunday, 26 July 2009 by Mr David Bradbury, Member for Lindsay, Mr Allan Shearan, Member for Londonderry and Councillor Jim Aitken, Mayor OAM, Penrith City Council.
During the celebration Council also name the hall within the Neighbourhood Centre the John Murphy and Alan Mills Hall. Both Mr Murphy and Mr Mills were very strong environmental advocates and instrumental in the establishment of the Castlereagh Community Grants Fund.
The Londonderry Playgroup has called the Londonderry Neighbourhood Centre home for many years and the children had missed being outside with their bikes and sandpit over the past 12 months while renovations were undertaken.

The group meets every Thursday from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon for fun, playtime, craft and morning tea.

Tourism online - e-kit the latest download!

I get a little confused at times with all the technical opportunities we have at our fingertips these days…and I know (or at least hope) I’m not the only one. I mean if you asked me to check out your blog a year or two ago I would have politely excused myself and fled. And really Facebook, My space, Twitter… where will it end! Unfortunately for those that hoped they were all just another craze, online marketing is here to stay.
Those that don’t embrace this technology may just get left behind. Who was it the publicly said “the internet will never take off”? I’d guess they have moved to a community that still has no electricity, and wake up every night in a sweat screaming http://www.what/?.
The Tourism E kit may make it a little easier for you (and I) to understand and embrace the world of online marketing. It was created by Tourism NSW, in partnership with the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse (ATDW) and all the Australian State and Territory Tourism Office. Its intention was to help you, as a tourism operator, understand and get involved in online marketing. You might find it useful for just a few topics, or want to download each tutorial.
The e-Kit tutorials are FREE (yes free!) and are intended to provide tourism operators access to a range of information about how to maximise online marketing opportunities.
The tutorials cover a range of topics including website and emails, search engine optimisation, e-marketing (including social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter), analysis and statistics.

Penrith is throwing a party and you're invited!

In November Penrith is throwing a 50th Birthday Party and like the hading suggests, you're all invited to it.

Over the next few months, this blogspot will be updated time and time again letting you know just how you can get involved in these wonderful celebrations.

One of the things I'm going to tell you about this week is a free concert starting at 8pm on Friday, November 13 at the Q Theatre called Beat Magic Concert, it's a night of drums, percussion, rhythm and a whole lot more! Tickets available from JSPAC Box Office from October 12 but remember there are only 380 seats available so to avoid disappointment, make sure you get in early.
Another free concert, which will be on the next day, is called Drums n Dance, it's in keeping with the theme of 'Beat Magic' except with some dance performance thrown in!
The venue 'Drums n Dance' is Memorial Hall, Penrith Valley Cultural Precinct, Mamre Road, St Marys 10 am.
Doors open at 9.30am, there are no tickets but only limited seating so it's first in, first served!

Family Fun Day a success!

Well I enjoyed myself and so did an estimated 3,000 other people who turned up, 'snuck a peek' and had some serious fun at the recent Penrith City Council Family Fun Day On August 8.
It was a beautiful, clear and brisk winter Saturday morning which greeted myself and dozens of other Council employees as we set up our displays and awaited for the public to sample all the things we had on offer.
There was a stage which featured some of the areas most promising young talent. Tree shrubs were given out by the thousand and hundreds of children got their chance to sit inside and experience some of the 'big trucks' their local Council uses to help keep the city clean.
There were rides and slides and even snakes....yeah...I kept away from that guy plus giveaways galore.
It was one of those days where you were entertained but also learned something as well. I, for one, enjoyed talking to all the people who stopped by the 'Information Stand', picked up a Penrith Valley Experience magazine and then went on their way with a big smile on their dial.
I look forward to doing it all again next year! I'll certainly be back, will you?

Nepean River Holiday Village wins Award

Congratulations must go to the Nepean River Holiday Village (NRHV) in Emu Plains which last week was awarded the prestigious Award of Excellence for the Best South Coast Holiday Park (31/2 – 4 Stars) at the Caravan and Camping Industry Association of NSW (CCIA) Awards of Excellence Gala Dinner.
However the good news didn’t stop there with two of the NRHV’s trainees, Rebecca and Melissa Smith, also receiving Awards of Excellence in the Trainee of the Year Park category.
The Awards of Excellence recognise caravan and holiday parks, manufactured home villages and estates, caravan and RV manufacturers, their range of accommodation and friendly, helpful staff. Congratulations again to owner Mark Lindsay, the management team of Phil & Paula Ward and all the staff on such a fine award and excellent achievement.

In October last year I committed to raise $1500 for one of our Penrith charities called Westcare Community Services. The craziest thing about this fundraiser is that I jumped out of a plane at 14,000 feet for this great cause.

It was so exciting and the atmosphere on the day was brilliant with many of us never having skydived before.

Parachute4Penrith is now an annual event with the next Family Day set for October 31, 2009. This year they are involving a kids fundraising event which includes a skip-a-thon and a bike-a-thon.

This is such a great event which raised $35,000 last year. I would encourage EVERYONE to give it a try. Why not show your support and see if you can help Westcare surpass last years target.

Tourism Toolkit launched at the VIC

The Minister for Tourism Jodi McKay stopped by the Penrith Valley Visitor Information Centre recently to announce the release of a new marketing toolkit to help Penrith City Council and local tourism businesses promote their tourist attractions.
The Tourism Precinct Toolkit, developed by Tourism NSW, is part of the $2.7 million Greater Sydney Tourism Partnership Funding Program.
The toolkit will help local businesses increase awareness of their destinations by helping them create a successful tourism strategy. The program includes two streams of funding support – for destination marketing campaigns and for event promotion.
The toolkit includes information on funding opportunities and budgeting, evaluating tourist experiences and information on how to form integrated partnerships with local business and larger tourism bodies.
Each year, for the next three years, $400,000 will be available to support co-operative destination marketing campaigns. A further $100,000 will be allocated for grants to assist local precincts promote events. These events must have the potential to attract overnight visitors from outside of Sydney.
Penrith Valley has so many great natural assets and wonderful tourism experiences to offer that I wouldn’t be surprised to see many new funding program applications pour in from entrepreneurial local tourism and business operators.

It’s time to Rock and Roll with the annual Mayoral Charity Ball on November 13 at the St Marys Band Club.
This year we’ll be taking people back to 1959 to an era of Rockabilly and Jive, so get your 50’s threads on and get pumped up for what’s going to be an amazing night of entertainment, provided by the acclaimed Elvis impersonator, David Cazalet. There will also be a tribute to Aussie rock icon, Johnny O’Keefe.
There’ll also be a sumptuous three course meal and drinks provided. The St Mary’s Band Club is the venue and it’ll be ‘decked out’ to suit the 1959 rockabilly theme, so we encourage everyone to come dressed up in style!
Every year a number of charities are chosen to receive all proceeds raised from the night.
This year Little by Little Inc and the Thorndale Foundation, both very worthwhile local charities have been picked.
The ball is an amazing opportunity for people to dance the night away, while supporting these two fabulous organisations that do such a great job for the local Penrith community.
Tickets for the evening are $110 per person or $1000 for a table of 10, which is just awesome value.

Penrith City Council Family Fun Day is only a month away! It's on Saturday, August 8 between 11am-3pm and it's open for the whole community to experience.
Family Fun Day is the newly refreshed and revitalised Penrith City Council Open Day. A new name and a slight change in format makes for a great FREE event with something for everyone - a mix of rides, games, displays, information, machinery and prizes, plus a showcase of local performers!
The fun takes place in the green area between Penrith City Library and The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.
There will be a collection of Council displays with interactive games, giveaways, as well as intriguing facts you probably didn’t know about your local area.
Family Fun Day is a great opportunity to ask all the questions you wanted of your Council and local area – in the one place at the one time! You can also pick up a free native shrub.
The littlies (and the 'big littlies') can get up close with snakes and a crocodile as part of the reptile show that’s in store! There will also be lots of laughs with P.Jamas the Clown roving around the event and her very own show at 2pm in the Penrith City Library Theatrette.

Penrith Valley is good at putting on free community festivals and events. Over the years Penrith City Council’s Australia Day celebrations have proved enormously popular while other community events like the Penrith City Festival and even the Penrith Show have attracted huge crowds.
Well, this year Penrith City Council is putting on some more big community events under the banner of ‘Penrith City Celebrates 2009’. There are many features to this great week of celebrations and one of them, which I’m personally involved in helping to organise, is the ‘Rock at the Weir Festival’ which will take place at Penrith Weir on Sunday, November 15 from midday to 5pm.
The milestone to be celebrated at ‘Rock at the Weir’ is the 100th anniversary of the Weir itself as well as the 50th birthday of Penrith as a ‘city’.
‘Rock at the Weir’ will have a real 1959 theme to it with rock and roll bands performing on stage, street performers amongst the crowd, milk bars, hula hoops Barbie dolls and much more including a live outside broadcast by Penrith’s local radio station VINTAGE 87.6FM.
There’s lots more to the event and the week itself and I’ll be sure to keep everyone up to date over the next few months.

After the success of the first Hawkesbury Harvest Farmers and Fine Food Market on May 2nd, "foodies" are looking forward to the next on Saturday, June 6. The May market was well visited, some stalls even sold out, the June market hopes to repeat its success.
The June 6th market promises more fresh and tasty local and regional produce and fine foods , fresh vegies, fruit, honey, cakes and much more.
It is also a great place to find breakfast, or brunch for those who are a little later to rise. Coffee, egg and bacon rolls, pastries and other tasty delights are available.
The market is held on the first Saturday held first Saturday of the month 8am-1pm in the civic precinct adjacent to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, High Street. Penrith.

There was a frenzy of activity on the grassed area next to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, May 2 as the Civic Precinct hosted Penrith’s first Hawkesbury Harvest Farmers and Fine Food Market.
The market was a hive of activity on this sunny autumn morning. As promised there was a wide range of fresh local and regional produce on offer as well as an assortment of fine and tasty foods, plants and even some beautiful flowers on sale.
The highlight of my many purchases was the crispiest, yummiest 'Pink Lady' apples, unfortunately they were all eaten by the end of the weekend. If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, then what does two or three do?
There were also plenty of options for a tasty breakfast or brunch. I could not go past a spinach and cheese gozleme before I headed home.
The market is held on the first Saturday of each month. The next market will be on Saturday 6th June from 8am until 1pm. See you there…

I thought I would jump in and write one of the first blog entries on the new and improved Penrith Valley blog , well here goes…
I have a pretty full on weekend just around the corner, one thing that I’m looking forward to is the very thing that has “rescued” me from my Saturday morning sleep in….This Saturday (May 2nd) will be Penrith’s first Hawkesbury Harvest Farmers and Fine Food Market.
The market starts at 8am but for all those who do stay under the doona a little longer on a Saturday the market will still be there until around 1pm.
Unless of course the stall holders sell out earlier (which I have been told happens at the other market locations!) So brave the cool autumn weather and get in early for the freshest finest produce and fine foods.
The market will be held on the first Saturday of each month on the grassed next to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and Penrith Council and Library (hmmm, better return that overdue book while I’m there…but that’s an entirely different story!).
Market stalls will be selling fresh local and regional produce including bread, lamb, duck, eggs, olives, sauces, vegetables, apples, honey, jams, plants, condiments wine, cupcakes, brownies, and pastries. There will even be some hot foods making it a great place to rustle up some breakfast or brunch.
